The 2004 Toyota Corolla Matrix has 4 recalls, all involving the airbag system, with the most serious being a Takata passenger-side airbag inflator that can rupture in a crash and send metal fragments into the cabin, potentially causing serious injury or death.
The remaining recalls also center on the airbag system. One involves the front airbags and seatbelt pretensioners deploying without a crash, which raises the risk of injury or a loss of vehicle control. The others, affecting vehicles in high-humidity regions including Florida, Gulf Coast states, Hawaii, and U.S. territories, also involve the passenger frontal airbag inflator rupturing and throwing metal fragments at occupants. Prior repair attempts did not fully resolve the inflator issue across all affected vehicles, which is why multiple campaigns exist for what is fundamentally the same hazard.
