Vehicles originally sold or registered in high-humidity regions, including Florida, Gulf Coast states, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and U.S. territories, face an elevated risk because moisture accelerates the degradation of the inflator propellant over time, making a violent rupture more likely during airbag deployment. The fragments released in such an event can strike the driver or passengers with enough force to cause serious injury or death.

The fourth recall applies specifically to vehicles where the front passenger airbag assembly was already replaced under a prior recall. That replacement inflator can fail to unfold correctly when it deploys in high-temperature conditions, leaving the bag partially inflated. An airbag that does not fully expand provides significantly less cushioning between the occupant and the dashboard in a crash, raising the risk of head and face injuries that a properly functioning airbag would otherwise help prevent.
