The 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser has 5 recalls, the most serious involving aftermarket heated seat elements that can short circuit and start a fire.
The front seatbelts present a structural concern: the retractors are mounted inside the rear access door panels, and those panels can crack over time from repeated forceful closing. If the panel cracks around the anchor point, the seatbelt retractor can pull free, reducing restraint in a crash. On the tire side, the tire pressure monitoring system may not warn the driver when a tire loses air, which can lead to tire failure; separately, certain vehicles fitted with accessory wheels and tires before their first sale may carry a tire placard listing the wrong spare tire size or inflation pressure, which can also cause tire failure if the spare is inflated to the incorrect number. There is also a lighting concern on vehicles equipped with Toyota's auxiliary driving lamp kit mounted to the front bumper, where the lights can exceed maximum intensity limits and create glare for oncoming drivers.
