The 2009 Toyota Highlander has 6 recalls, the most serious being a stuck accelerator pedal that can trap at full throttle, making the vehicle very difficult to slow or stop and raising the risk of a serious crash.
Two recalls involve fire risk. Certain vehicles equipped with aftermarket seat heaters have a copper heating element that can short circuit and start a fire. Separately, the driver's window switch can accumulate moisture and debris, causing it to overheat and melt, which also raises a fire risk. Both recalls apply to vehicles distributed through Southeast Toyota. Highlander Hybrid models have an additional concern: the inverter can develop a fault that forces the vehicle into a limited-power mode, significantly reducing driveability.
On the occupant safety side, the front passenger seat's occupant sensing system can fall out of calibration, causing the passenger airbag to either fail to deploy in a crash or deploy at the wrong force for the person seated there. A lower-priority recall affects vehicles sold without required tire load capacity labels, which means a driver may not know the vehicle's weight limits and could inadvertently overload it.
