The 2012 Toyota Prius Plug-in has 2 recalls, the more serious being a curtain airbag inflator that can crack and eject fragments into the passenger cabin during deployment, raising the risk of injury to occupants. The hybrid system also has a recall: a fuse inside the high-voltage battery pack can fracture after repeated high-demand driving, such as climbing long hills. When the fuse fails, the hybrid system shuts down and the vehicle loses power, which increases crash risk at highway speeds.
