The 2022 Toyota RAV4 has two recalls, the more serious being a front passenger seat sensor that can misread who is sitting in the seat, causing the airbag to deploy incorrectly in a crash and raising the risk of injury.
The sensor that determines whether the front passenger seat holds an adult, a child, or no one at all can give a wrong reading due to interference between internal parts in the seat assembly. When it misclassifies the occupant, the airbag may fire too hard, too softly, or not at all for the situation, which can make a crash more dangerous than it would otherwise be. This recall covers RAV4, RAV4 Hybrid, and RAV4 Prime variants. The second recall affects only hybrid and plug-in hybrid models and involves a software issue in the electronic stability control system. Under certain conditions, the software can deactivate stability control without the driver's knowledge, removing the system that helps prevent skids and loss of control on slippery or uneven roads.
