1998 Toyota Sienna

The 1998 Toyota Sienna has two recalls, the most serious being a corroded spare tire carrier cable that can snap and drop the spare tire onto the road, creating a collision hazard for following traffic.

Both recalls describe the same underlying defect: the cable that holds the spare tire beneath the vehicle corrodes over time, particularly on vehicles driven in states where road salt is heavily used. As the cable degrades, it can break and release the full weight of the spare tire onto the road surface with no warning. A tire falling from a moving vehicle can strike other cars, cause drivers to swerve, or become a direct obstacle. This concern applies to vehicles currently registered in, or originally sold in, states across the Northeast, Midwest, and Mid-Atlantic regions where winter road treatment is common.
