The 2006 Toyota Tacoma has 7 recalls, the most serious being a leaf spring that can fracture from stress or corrosion on Pre-Runner and 4x4 models, puncturing the fuel tank and creating a fire risk.
Tires are the subject of two related recalls: improper assembly can damage the tire bead, causing a sidewall bulge, air loss, and potential tire failure while driving. On the safety equipment side, the driver's airbag has two separate concerns worth noting together. Steering wheel vibration can damage the spiral cable assembly that powers the airbag, and a flexible flat cable in the same steering column assembly can also lose connectivity, both of which can leave the driver's airbag inactive in a crash. There is also a seatbelt concern specific to Access Cab models: repeatedly slamming the rear access doors can gradually loosen the screws that secure the seatbelt pretensioner, and if it detaches, the belt will not tighten properly in a crash. Finally, certain vehicles equipped with aftermarket seat heaters distributed through Southeast Toyota may have a copper heating element that can short circuit and cause a fire.
