The 1990 Volkswagen Cabriolet has 3 recalls, the most serious being a cracked fuel tank that can leak gasoline and catch fire, along with a throttle linkage that can stick and cause unintended acceleration.
The fuel tank can develop a crack near a seam weld at the rear, allowing fuel to drip out where it can ignite near any heat source. Separately, a panel in the engine compartment between the engine and firewall can bend if someone leans on it during routine maintenance, and a bent panel can bind the accelerator linkage and cause the engine to rev or accelerate without input from the driver. The third recall involves the airbag wiring harness, which may have been routed through a dashboard opening where it can become pinched and worn through over time, disabling the airbag system entirely.
