13 recalls across 9 model years
The Volkswagen CC has 13 recalls covering the 2009–2017 production run, with the most serious being a driver's frontal airbag inflator defect on 2015–2017 models where the inflator can rupture in a crash and send metal fragments into the cabin.
Recalls 3 and 4 and 6 describe the same underlying airbag inflator rupture risk, covering the full 2009–2017 span. The 2009–2014 model years are subject to this same inflator failure, where excessive pressure during deployment can cause the unit to explode and scatter metal fragments toward the driver. Separate from the inflator issue, 2015–2016 models have a defective capacitor in the airbag control unit that can either trigger airbags and seatbelt pretensioners without a crash or prevent them from deploying when actually needed. The 2010–2014 model years have an additional airbag concern: debris can contaminate the clock spring, the coiled cable that keeps the driver's airbag connected while the steering wheel turns, cutting power to the airbag and preventing deployment in a crash.
On the fuel system side, 2009–2016 models can lose electrical power to the fuel pump control module, causing the pump to fail and the engine to stall without warning. The 2016–2017 model years have incorrect front head restraints that may not adequately support an occupant's head in a crash. A narrow group of 2016 vehicles has a rear door child safety lock issue where the locks may not engage, allowing a child to open the door from inside while the vehicle is moving.
Going back to early production, 2009 models have a misrouted wiring harness under the right front passenger seat that can be damaged when the seat is adjusted, disabling the passenger frontal airbag. The 2012 model year has a compliance issue where port-installed accessory wheels were fitted with incorrect tire pressure sensors, causing a constant false warning on the dashboard. The 2017 and 2012–2016 model years each have separate recalls tied to vehicles that were used internally and may not meet all regulatory requirements before being sold.
