The 2009 Volkswagen GTI has 3 recalls, the most serious being an ABS control unit that can fail during hard braking or stability control activation, potentially causing loss of vehicle control and raising the risk of a crash.

Recalls 1 and 2 describe the same underlying ABS defect: when the anti-lock brakes or electronic stability control engages, the control module can fail entirely. Beyond the loss of those systems, the failure triggers warning lights for ABS, brakes, and stability control on the dashboard, leaving the driver without the electronic safety net those systems provide during emergency maneuvers or slippery conditions. There is also an electrical concern: a fuse in the fuse box can overheat and damage the surrounding fuse box housing, knocking out some of the vehicle's exterior lights. Losing running lights, brake lights, or turn signals makes the car harder for other drivers to see, particularly at night or in low-visibility conditions.
