The 2004 Volkswagen Touareg has 8 recalls, the most serious being two separate fire risks: a wiring harness near the parking brake cable that can short and ignite, and a fuel pump flange that can crack and leak fuel near an ignition source. On the safety restraint side, rear seat belt latch bolts may not be sufficiently secured, meaning the latch can pull free in a crash and leave the occupant unrestrained. A related concern involves child restraints in the rear seat that may not be properly anchored in a crash, raising the risk of injury. There is also a label compliance issue: the tire pressure placard on the driver's side door pillar is missing required information including the vehicle's weight ratings and recommended wheel rim size, leaving owners without accurate guidance for tire and load specifications.

Defect

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2004-2007 Touareg vehicles. These gasoline-powered vehicles have a fuel filter flange that may crack, allowing fuel to leak.

Safety Risk

A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.

Remedy

Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the fuel filter flange for cracks, replacing the flange if cracks are found. If no cracks are found, a protective cover will be installed onto the filter flange. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began March 9, 2018. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 20Ai.
