Summary
The Volkswagen Touareg has 20 recalls covering the 2004–2016 production run, with the most serious recent issue being a missing securing clip at the brake pedal pivot on 2011–2016 vehicles, which can allow the pedal to dislodge and leave the driver unable to apply the brakes.
The brake pedal issue also has an earlier-production dimension: on some 2011 vehicles the same clip was missing at assembly, and continued use can fracture the pivot pin entirely. On 2011–2015 Touareg Hybrid models, the high-voltage battery tray can fail to drain standing water, leading to an electrical short in the battery pack and a risk of fire. There is also a tire pressure monitoring system calibration problem on 2016 models where the system can fail to warn of low tire pressure, allowing a tire to fail while driving.
Across the mid-production years, fuel system integrity is a recurring concern. The fuel filter flange on 2004–2010 gasoline-powered vehicles can crack and allow fuel to pool in the engine compartment, and a poorly sealed fuel supply line connector on 2008 models carries the same leak-and-fire risk. The 2007 model year has an additional fuel pump flange that can develop cracks and leak. On 2007–2009 vehicles, the fastening struts on the roof edge spoiler can crack and allow the spoiler to detach at speed, creating a hazard for other drivers and pedestrians nearby.
Going back to the earliest production years, 2004 models have a cluster of issues: a TPMS wiring harness that can contact the parking brake cable spring, short to ground, and cause a fire; a rear seat belt latch attachment bolt that may not hold under crash loads; and a child restraint anchor compliance issue that can prevent child seats from being properly secured in a crash. The 2004 model also carries the fuel pump flange cracking concern shared with later years, and a label on Canadian-market vehicles that omits key tire and weight rating information.
