The 2013 Volvo VAH has 5 recalls, the most serious including a fifth wheel locking mechanism that can fail and allow a trailer to detach while underway, a drag link ball joint that can corrode and separate causing complete loss of steering, and an exhaust system on auto-hauler conversions that can transfer enough heat to the cab roof or vehicles loaded above to start a fire.
A separate issue involves the trim panel cutout around the trailer hand brake handle, which can prevent the handle from returning to the off position. When the trailer service brakes drag continuously, the wheel end overheats and can catch fire or blow a tire. On the tire side, certain operating conditions including high speed, heavy load, and high road temperatures can cause premature tire failure.
