The 2003 Volvo XC90 has 7 recalls, the most serious involving the outer tie rod ball joint, which can fracture under load and cause a sudden loss of steering control, and a portable Garmin GPS unit whose battery can overheat and start a fire in the cabin.
The tie rod and GPS issues are the most urgent concerns. On the restraint side, second- and third-row seatbelt attachments may not have been properly secured at the factory, meaning those belts can fail to hold occupants in a crash. There is also a visibility concern: in extreme winter conditions, running the wipers without first clearing heavy snow can cause the wiper arm to slip on its driveshaft, leaving the wipers stuck and unable to clear the windshield.
