The 2004 Volvo XC90 has 3 recalls, the most serious being a risk of sudden unintended acceleration and a potential fire — two separate issues that each carry significant safety consequences.
A faulty front wheel speed sensor can send incorrect signals that cause the anti-lock brakes and cruise control to behave erratically. In some cases this can trigger the cruise control to engage from a standstill or low speed, causing the vehicle to accelerate without driver input. The same type of sensor fault can also interfere with brake, engine, transmission, and torque distribution systems, all of which depend on accurate wheel speed data to operate correctly. Prior repair attempts did not fully resolve the issue, which is why it appears across more than one recall. Separately, certain vehicles equipped with a Garmin 760 portable GPS unit have a battery that can overheat and start a fire.
