The 2022 Volvo XC90 has 5 recalls, the most serious including a steering gear defect where a loose screw inside the gearbox can cause the steering wheel to lock up, and a high-voltage battery that can short-circuit while parked and fully charged, raising the risk of fire.
Several recalls affect the plug-in hybrid variant specifically. A software error in the engine control module can prevent the combustion engine from starting, and as the high-voltage battery drains, the vehicle can lose drive power entirely. A separate software fault can cause total brake failure under certain conditions. On the safety restraint side, second-row seat belt buckle and lower anchor bolts may not be tightened properly, which can allow the belt to fail to hold an occupant in a crash.
