22 recalls across 19 model years
The BMW 530i has 22 recalls spanning 2000 through 2025, with the most serious recent issue affecting 2024–2025 models where the integrated brake system can malfunction, causing loss of power brake assist and failure of the anti-lock brakes and stability control, which can extend stopping distances and cause loss of vehicle control.
On 2025 models, a loose electrical connection between the starter-generator and battery can cause an engine stall or allow wiring to overheat and catch fire. Also on 2025 models, the airbag control unit may have been built incorrectly, preventing airbags from deploying in a crash. The 2024 model year has an additional issue where a faulty ground connection to the steering wheel disables the hands-on detection system, meaning the vehicle may not recognize when the driver's hands leave the wheel and fail to trigger the emergency stopping assistant.
On 2022 models, an improperly assembled mechatronics unit inside the automatic transmission can leak internally and allow the vehicle to roll away. The 2021–2024 model years share a starter assembly fire risk, and 2020–2022 models have a separate starter relay that can corrode, overheat, and short circuit, also raising the risk of fire. The 2020–2021 xDrive variants have rear output shafts that can fracture, causing sudden loss of drive power or a rollaway if the parking brake is not engaged. A 2021 model year battery cable issue can increase electrical resistance and raise fire risk, and 2021 models also have a seat belt retractor that may not function correctly in a crash.
The 2018–2020 model years have a rearview camera that can fail to display an image when reversing, and 2020–2021 models have a related issue where part of the camera image may be obscured or missing. The 2017 model year has head airbag inflators that can be affected by moisture, potentially impairing deployment or causing the igniter to separate in a crash. Going back to 2006, the positive crankcase ventilation valve heater can short circuit and melt surrounding components, creating a fire risk even with the engine off. That same year, the front passenger seat sensor can fail and deactivate the passenger airbag.
The 2007–2011 model years share the same crankcase ventilation valve short circuit and fire risk as the 2006 models. On 2002–2003 models, the driver's frontal airbag inflator can rupture and send metal fragments into the cabin, and 2000–2003 models with the optional sports steering wheel have a similar Takata-type inflator rupture risk on the driver's side.
