At the same time, the anti-lock brake system can stop functioning, which removes the protection against wheel lockup during hard braking, and the dynamic stability control can fail, leaving the car without electronic intervention during skids or loss of traction. Prior repair attempts did not fully resolve the issue across all affected vehicles, which is why multiple filings address the same underlying brake system defect.

There is also a fire risk tied to the starter assembly. A fault in the electrical starter system can generate enough heat to ignite a fire, with the risk of injury to occupants or bystanders. This recall covers a range of BMW models across several model years.

The remaining recall involves the driver monitoring camera and hands-on detection system. A grounding connection to the steering wheel may not have been properly secured, causing the system to fail to detect when the driver's hands leave the wheel. When that detection fails, the vehicle cannot trigger its emergency stopping assistant, which is designed to bring the car to a controlled stop if the driver becomes unresponsive.
