NHTSA 5-Star Safety Rating
The 2012 Cadillac Escalade ESV has 3 recalls, all involving the front passenger airbag inflator, which can rupture and send sharp metal fragments into the cabin, causing serious injury or death.
All three recalls address the same defect in the passenger-side frontal airbag inflator. When the airbag deploys, the inflator can explode beyond its designed pressure limits, breaking apart and launching metal shards toward anyone seated in the front passenger seat or nearby. The risk is greatest in high-humidity climates, and these recalls specifically target vehicles originally sold or registered in warm, humid states and territories including Florida, Texas, Hawaii, and others in that climate zone. Prior repair attempts did not fully resolve the issue, which is why multiple recall campaigns now exist for the same underlying problem. This is part of the broader Takata airbag recall, one of the largest in automotive history, and the inflator failure mechanism has been directly linked to fatalities.
