These recalls apply to vehicles originally sold or registered in high-humidity states and territories including Alabama, California, Florida, Hawaii, Texas, and others, as moisture accelerates the condition that causes the inflator to fail. If your vehicle falls within the affected population, the inflator can burst when the airbag deploys, scattering sharp metal shards toward the driver and passengers rather than providing protection. On the mechanical side, this Escalade EXT also has a rear axle recall: a cross pin inside the rear axle can fracture and shift out of position, causing the rear axle to lock up suddenly. When that happens, the driver loses the ability to steer or control direction, and a crash can occur with no warning.
