Two of the recalls address the front seat-mounted side impact airbags. The inflators inside these bags can rupture when the airbag fires, either scattering broken inflator components toward the driver and passengers or causing the bag to inflate only partially, reducing the protection it was meant to provide. The third recall covers the driver-side frontal airbag, where a similar rupture risk can send sharp metal fragments directly toward the driver. Across all three of these issues, the concern is the same: a system designed to protect occupants in a collision can instead become a source of injury.
