39 recalls across 20 model years
The Chevrolet Silverado 3500 has 39 recalls spanning 2007 through 2026, with the most serious recent issue being a 2024 model year steering gear shaft that can fracture and disconnect from the steering arm, causing a total loss of steering control.
On 2025-2026 models with gasoline engines and dual fuel tanks, the rear fuel pump can fail to transfer fuel to the front tank, stalling the engine while driving. The 2026 model year also has a compliance recall for missing owner's manuals. On 2024 models with power-unlatching tailgates, water intrusion can short the electronic release switch and cause the tailgate to open on its own, spilling cargo onto the road.
The 2021-2022 model years have a brake pressure modulator valve that may not be properly sealed, allowing water inside the assembly and raising the risk of an electrical fire. On 2020-2022 diesel-equipped models, the transmission control valve can fail and lock up the rear wheels without warning. The 2020 model year has several additional issues: hood latch striker wires can fracture and let the hood fly open while driving; the front-row center seat belt bracket may not be secured to the seat frame; and during a crash, hot gas from the front seat belt pretensioners can vent onto the carpet and start a fire inside the cabin. A roof-rail airbag diffuser on 2020 models may also separate during deployment, reducing the bag's ability to protect occupants.
The 2019 model year carries a roof-rail airbag inflator defect where the end cap or inflator sidewall can rupture, sending fragments or the cap itself into the cabin. The same inflator defect affects 2015-2016 and 2018-2019 model years. On 2017-2019 models equipped with the optional Duramax diesel engine block heater, an electrical short in the heater cable or its terminals can cause a fire. Those same years, on dual-tank diesel configurations, the rear fuel tank can collapse and cut off fuel transfer, stalling the engine. The 2017-2018 model years have front seat belt retractors built with the wrong torsion bar, which can prevent the belt from performing correctly in a crash. Seat belt pretensioner and airbag deployment failures on 2015-2017 models can leave the driver and front passenger without proper restraint protection in a crash.
The 2015-2016 model years have a brake pedal pivot nut that can loosen, making the pedal loose or inoperative and potentially interfering with the accelerator. On 2015-2016 models, a separate roof-rail airbag inflator end cap defect also applies. Dual-tank gasoline models from 2011-2015 and 2016-2018 share a fuel-level sensor issue where the front tank can overfill, expand under pressure, and contact the driveshaft, potentially puncturing the tank. The 2010-2014 model years, specifically those originally sold or registered in high-humidity states and territories, have a passenger frontal airbag inflator that can explode and send metal fragments into the cabin. The same Takata-related inflator risk applies to 2009-2013 models in those same regions, and to 2007-2008 models including vehicles that received interim replacement inflators during earlier repair campaigns. The 2009-2014 model years also have a recall covering certain fire extinguishers that may fail to function in an emergency
