The 2007 Dodge Nitro has 10 recalls, the most serious involving a heat shield that can drop and wear through the drive shaft, causing it to break, lose drive power, and potentially trigger airbag deployment from the impact force alone.
A separate software issue in the power module can cause the engine to stall without warning. On the airbag side, the steering wheel emblem and its retaining hardware can come loose and turn into projectiles when the driver airbag deploys in a crash. On manual transmission models, the parking brake drum can distort and lose holding force, allowing the vehicle to roll away unexpectedly. The anti-lock brake system also has a software defect that can cause a brief delay in braking response when coasting uphill, which can reduce stopping ability at a critical moment. Finally, heavy use of the windshield wiper delay mode can eventually disable the wiper system entirely, leaving the driver without visibility in rain or snow.
