When either frontal airbag fires, the inflator can build more pressure than it is designed to handle, causing it to burst. In one case, the lift platform can begin moving on its own without being commanded, which puts anyone on or near the lift at risk of being caught off guard. In the other, the lift can start folding itself into the stowed position while still occupied, which could trap or injure a passenger before they have a chance to clear the platform. Both issues stem from the lift failing to meet federal safety standards for adaptive mobility equipment.
