The 1992 Ford Explorer has 6 recalls, the most serious being a fire risk: a short circuit in the power mirror control switch can overheat the switch assembly and surrounding plastic components, producing smoke or fire. On the brake side, the studs that attach the brake master cylinder to the vacuum booster can develop cracks over time and fracture, which can reduce or eliminate power brake assist. Two separate recalls cover the rear liftgate support cylinders: the brackets welded to the inside of the liftgate can crack or pull away, causing the gas-assist cylinders to disengage and leaving the liftgate unable to hold itself open on its own. On vehicles equipped with a factory sunroof, the glass panel can separate from its hinges while the vehicle is moving, which can startle the driver and raise the risk of losing control.
