These trucks were modified by third-party upfitters and fitted with Muncie Power Products power take-off assemblies, which are mechanical systems that draw engine power to run equipment like dump beds or service cranes. The pressure switch on these assemblies can seep oil, and because that oil drips onto the insulating blanket wrapped around the exhaust, the material can absorb enough fluid to catch fire from the exhaust heat beneath it. The defect was filed by multiple upfitters who installed the same underlying equipment, but the problem in every case is identical: the switch was never actually connected to the vehicle's operating systems, meaning it served no function and can simply be removed and plugged off without affecting how the truck works. All three recalls involve the same repair approach, covering vehicles that passed through different modification shops before reaching their owners.
