2012 FORD FOCUS Recalls — Canada & USA

The 2012 Ford Focus has 14 recalls, the most serious involving sudden engine or drive power loss while driving, which can happen without warning and leave the vehicle unable to restart, raising the risk of a crash. Several recalls center on this stalling issue. On Focus Electric models, a software problem in the powertrain control module can cut drive power unexpectedly. On gasoline models with the 2.0L engine, a canister purge valve can stick open and create excessive vacuum in the fuel system, stalling the engine and deforming the fuel tank, which can also cause erratic fuel gauge readings. Prior repair attempts for this purge valve problem did not fully resolve it in some vehicles, requiring a second fix. Focus Electric owners should also be aware of a 120V charging cord that can overheat at the outlet connection, melt, and pose a fire risk. On the structural side, a door latch spring can break and allow a door that appears closed to swing open while driving. For visibility, a missing seal in the wiring connector to the passenger-side wiper motor can let water in and cause that wiper to work intermittently or stop entirely. Some vehicles equipped with high-intensity discharge headlights also have inoperative front side marker lights, reducing how visible the car is to other drivers at night. Finally, Focus Electric models with the push-button start system produce no audible chime when the driver opens the door while the car is still on, which can lead to the vehicle being left running and unattended.
