Summary
The Ford Police Interceptor Utility has 10 recalls spanning 2013 through 2024, with the most serious recent issue affecting 2024 hybrid-equipped vehicles where the 12V battery cable can contact the starter generator, short circuit, and start a fire.
The 2024 model year also has a recall covering vehicles equipped with the trailer tow package, where improperly torqued hitch bolts can loosen and allow the hitch and any attached trailer to detach while driving, creating a hazard for other traffic. Stepping back to 2020, connecting rod bearing wear in certain vehicles with the 3.3L gas or hybrid engine can cause the engine to seize, cutting drive power or igniting a fire. Also on 2020 models, the rearview camera on vehicles with the 12.1-inch integrated screen may fail to display when reversing, and on a small number of those vehicles the windshield washer reservoir may have been filled with brake-fluid-contaminated washer fluid, which can damage the wiper system and leave the windshield obscured.
On the structural side, 2016 models have exterior B-pillar trim on the front doors that can work loose and shed onto the road. The 2017 model year carries a rear suspension toe link recall where the outer ball joint can seize and the link can break while driving, causing a sudden loss of stability. The 2014 model year has a related issue where an improperly welded rear suspension toe link can fracture, producing rear-end noise, difficulty steering, or an outright loss of steering control. Going back to 2013, the same toe link ball joint seizure and fracture risk applies, and a separate recall covers 2013 models operated in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, where soil accumulation at the toe link attachment point can cause bending stress and fracture the link.
