The 1998 Ford Ranger has 8 recalls, the most serious being a fuel line routed too close to the exhaust manifold on 4.0L-equipped trucks, where contact can damage the line, cause a fuel leak, and start a fire.
There is also a cruise control concern: the speed control cable can interfere with the throttle servo pulley and prevent the throttle from returning to idle after disengaging cruise control, leaving the truck accelerating on its own. Two recalls apply only to Ranger Electric models. The park detent spring in the transaxle can be misaligned, meaning the transmission may not engage park when selected, allowing the vehicle to roll freely if the parking brake is not set. Separately, the bolts holding the transaxle to the vehicle can loosen and eventually fall out or fracture entirely, causing the transaxle to drop from its mount and shift into an unintended gear without warning. On the compliance side, four-wheel drive trucks with the off-road option carry an incorrect tire and rim label, listing a 15-inch rim size when the actual wheels are 16 inches, which means the stated tire inflation instructions do not match the actual equipment.
