The 1978 GMC Brigadier has two recalls of equal severity, the most critical being a steering shaft connection that can separate and cause complete loss of steering control.
The steering column's intermediate shaft may not be securely fastened to the upper shaft, and if that connection lets go while driving, the driver loses the ability to steer the vehicle. The second recall applies to trucks equipped with air brakes and either a 427 cubic inch gasoline engine or a six- or eight-cylinder Detroit Diesel Allison engine: the copper air lines running to the brake application valve may have been connected to the wrong ports during assembly, meaning a significant air leak in the rear brake system can cause total loss of service brakes with no warning to the driver beforehand.
