Summary
The GMC Sierra has 116 recalls spanning the 1990 through 2026 model years; the most serious recent issue affects 2024–2025 Sierra EV models, where a rear center seat belt anchor bolt may not have been properly tightened, preventing the belt from restraining an occupant in a crash.
The Sierra EV lineup has a second recall covering 2026 models where the electronic stability control warning light may not illuminate after a system fault, leaving the driver unaware that stability control has failed. On 2024 models, the front turn signals can be difficult to distinguish from the parking lights, reducing their visibility to other drivers. Going back to 2022, a power-locking tailgate on 2023 models can unlatch while parked when water enters the switch, allowing unsecured cargo to fall onto the road. Also on 2022 models, an accessory sport bar can block the factory high-mounted brake light and fail to light its own, and a chrome front grille deflector can detach at speed.
The 2019–2020 generation carries a dense cluster of recalls. On 2020 models, certain Continental tires may have been over-cured during manufacturing, causing sidewall cracking or tread separation and sudden pressure loss. The same tire issue affected some 2019 models and required a second inspection after an earlier repair was found incomplete. A loose alternator positive cable nut on 2019 trucks can cause the engine to stall or create electrical arcing that may start a fire. The driveshaft on some 2019 trucks was not properly welded and can break under load. Brake caliper bolts on 2020 trucks can fracture, detaching the caliper and reducing stopping ability. On 2019 vehicles, a software error can silently disable anti-lock brakes and electronic stability control without triggering any warning lights; a separate but related software issue required a second repair after the first fix introduced a new error affecting brake assist. A factory tri-fold tonneau cover can detach from 2019 trucks at highway speed. Front-row center seat belt brackets may not be properly attached on 2019 trucks, and after a crash where a front pretensioner fires, the carpet can ignite. The passenger frontal airbag on some 2019 trucks has a damaged retainer ring that lets gas escape during deployment, reducing the airbag's protective effect. The optional spare tire on 2019 trucks equipped with larger wheels is smaller in diameter than the road tires, which can interfere with anti-lock brake function when the spare is on a rear position.
The 2014–2018 era accounts for a large share of recalls. On 2018 models, side curtain airbag inflators can deploy without a crash and propel fragments into the cabin. On 2016 models, an airbag sensing module mounting stud can stress and fracture the module housing, allowing water intrusion that causes the module to malfunction. On 2014–2015 trucks, exhaust components can overheat at idle in cold weather and melt nearby plastic parts, potentially causing a fire. A 2015-only recall covers power steering hose clamps on 2500/3500 HD models that can come loose and leak fluid, and separately, rear axle shafts on a narrow band of 2015 production can fracture and separate a rear wheel. The 2015 HD diesel also has a fuel vent line hose clamp that may not have been tightened, allowing a fuel leak near ignition sources. Side curtain airbag inflators on 2015
