The 2019 GMC Sierra has 13 recalls, the most serious involving tires that can crack or shed their tread, a battery cable connection that can loosen and cause the engine to stall or arc and start a fire, and a driveshaft that can break and cut power to the wheels while driving.
Several recalls affect braking and stability. The anti-lock brakes can behave unpredictably when a smaller spare tire is installed on a rear wheel position, increasing stopping distance. A software error can silently disable both the electronic stability control and anti-lock brakes without triggering any warning light on the dash. There is also a brake assist issue where a prior software repair did not fully resolve the problem, leaving the brake pedal with longer travel than intended and reduced stopping power.
On the safety equipment side, the front passenger airbag can lose pressure during deployment if a retainer ring inside the module was damaged during assembly, reducing how well it cushions the passenger in a crash. The front center seat belt bracket may not be properly secured to the seat frame and can pull free in a crash. In a collision where a front seatbelt pretensioner fires, the carpet nearby can ignite.
Four recalls cover tri-fold tonneau bed covers, both soft and hard versions, that can detach from the truck at speed and become a road hazard for other vehicles.
