85 recalls across 28 model years
The GMC Savana has 85 recalls spanning the 1996–2026 model years, with the most serious recent issue affecting 2026 models where an incorrectly manufactured steering column component causes the gear shifter to report the wrong gear, potentially leading to sudden unexpected vehicle movement.
The 2025–2026 era also has a tire sidewall damage recall on 2025–2026 Cutaway models where affected tires can lose air suddenly and cause loss of control. On 2025 models, the front passenger seat head restraint may have been improperly welded and could move or detach in a crash, and the driver's door impact beam may also have poor welds that reduce side-impact protection.
The 2022–2023 model years have a transmission control module software defect that can cause harsh shifts, rear wheel lockup, or the vehicle moving in an unintended direction. The 2021 models with the 6.6L gasoline engine have positive battery cable terminals that can contact the fuse block and cause a fire. On 2019 models, the seat belt and airbag warning lights fail to illuminate during the startup bulb check as required. The 2018–2021 model years are subject to a tire recall covering certain Continental tires that were cured too long, which can cause sidewall cracking or tread and belt separation with sudden air loss. The 2016–2019 models may have rear-quarter windows made from tempered rather than laminated glass, which increases the risk of occupant ejection in a side impact or rollover. On 2016–2018 models equipped with a single manual rear climate control module, an electrical short can cause that module to overheat and ignite the headliner. The 2014–2017 models with power windows have a driver's window switch that can corrode from liquid intrusion, overheat, and create a fire risk.
Going back further, 2012 models have two notable issues: the steering gear pitman shaft can fracture and cause total loss of steering, and the second stage of the front passenger dual-stage airbag may not deploy in a severe frontal crash. The 2011–2013 compressed natural gas models have CNG system connectors and high-pressure regulators that can leak or corrode, creating a fire or explosion risk. The 2010 models with a 145-amp alternator have a voltage regulator that can develop an internal short and eventually catch fire under the hood. On 2008 Cutaway models with a specific wheelbase, a frame rail that contacts the fuel tank housing can wear through and leak fuel. A separate 2008 issue on certain Cutaway fleet vans with the 6.0L engine is a transmission that can engage first gear at highway speeds and lose the ability to transmit power at all. The 2008 AWD models also have a transfer case drive chain that can break and allow the vehicle to roll even with the transmission in Park.
The 2003–2004 model years carry several issues. Multiple recalls cover seat belt buckles on 2003–2004 vehicles that either will not latch, will not release, or can eject the latch plate when the pretensioner fires in a crash. The 2003 model also has a rear license plate lamp socket that corrodes, overheats, and can melt and smoke. The 2003 Cutaway incomplete vehicles have an unused rear HVAC wiring harness that can corrode and short circuit, with the same underlying wiring issue affecting Cutaway models through the 2023 model year as well.
