The 1996 GMC Savana has 5 recalls, with two serious concerns: fuel leaks that can ignite a fire and rear axle u-bolts that can break and cause sudden loss of vehicle control.
On the fuel side, a rollover valve in the fuel tank can stick open and allow fuel to leak when the vehicle is parked on a downhill grade, and separately, fuel lines and fittings on passenger vans can leak or produce fuel odors near potential ignition sources, either of which raises the risk of fire. For the rear suspension, a u-bolt holding the axle to the leaf spring can break, allowing the spring to lift free of the axle during braking, cornering, or rebound, which lets the rear axle shift and feed unintended steering inputs to the vehicle. There is also a steering concern: the nut securing the relay rod's tapered stud may not have been tightened to the correct torque, and over time the stud can fracture, resulting in a complete loss of steering control.
