The 2000 GMC Sierra has 5 recalls, the most serious affecting 3500HD models where a steering drag link can fail to properly seat on the pitman arm, creating a loose connection in the steering linkage that can affect directional control.
Two other recalls involve safety systems. The airbag control module on certain trucks contains an anomaly that can prevent both front airbags from deploying in a frontal crash, leaving front-seat occupants with less protection. On trucks with four-wheel disc brakes, an out-of-spec clip inside the anti-lock brake system motor can allow the motor bearing to shift out of alignment, eventually disabling the ABS and the front-to-rear brake balance system, though the base brakes continue to work.
On the drivetrain side, a hydraulic pump driveshaft can fracture and cause power steering assist to disappear suddenly, requiring noticeably more effort to turn the wheel. On trucks equipped with hydraulic brake boosters, the same fracture can also reduce braking assist once the system's reserve pressure runs out. There is also a tailgate concern: the steel support cables that hold the tailgate open can corrode and snap under load, and the plastic sheathing around the cables can hide that corrosion until the cable breaks.
