The 2005 GMC Sierra has 7 recalls, the most serious being two that can leave the driver without steering: a bolt connecting the intermediate steering shaft to the steering gear can fracture and cause total loss of steering control with no warning.
A separate steering recall covers a power steering hose that can fracture during hard turns, causing fluid to leak and forcing the driver to steer with significantly more effort. On the fuel side, retainer screws on the fuel rail crossover tube can break, allowing fuel to leak near the engine; if an ignition source is present, an engine compartment fire can result, and the engine may stall in the meantime. This fuel system recall only affects vehicles equipped with the 5.3L V8 engine. There is also a compliance concern where the shift position indicator in the instrument cluster may not illuminate under certain starting conditions, which can allow the vehicle to move in an unintended direction. Finally, on Sierra Denali trims, the owner's manual contains incorrect information about child seat tether anchor locations and installation instructions.
