The 1988 GMC C Series has 4 recalls, the most serious being a transmission fluid fire risk: pressure buildup or fluid forced out during heavy towing or off-road use can spray transmission fluid onto hot engine components or the catalytic converter, where it can ignite.
The fire risk described above appears across multiple filings covering overlapping conditions, including hard towing at highway speeds and high-load driving, but the core danger in each case is the same: transmission fluid escaping and reaching a hot surface. Prior recall efforts do not appear to have fully resolved the issue, which is why multiple filings exist for what is functionally the same failure. Owners who tow heavy loads or drive in demanding conditions should be aware this risk is particularly relevant under those circumstances.
On the braking side, this recall only affects C2500 and K2500 trucks equipped with the 6.2-litre diesel engine and a specific transmission. The rear anti-lock brake system can be disabled by an electrical fault, which means the rear wheels can lock up under hard braking. The front and rear brakes still work, but the warning light on the dashboard will not alert the driver that the anti-lock function has stopped working, so the loss of rear ABS happens silently.
