The 2004 GMC Canyon has 5 recalls, the most serious involving the brake lights, which can either stop working entirely or stay on at all times, leaving following drivers with no reliable warning when the brakes are applied.
This brake light issue affects the center high-mounted stop lamp as well as the standard brake lamps, and also disables cruise control on equipped vehicles. Prior repair attempts did not fully resolve the problem, which is why multiple campaigns address the same underlying switch defect. There are also two other recalls worth noting. On regular and extended cab models without a rear seat and equipped with a front split bench, the child restraint tether anchor at the center front position is not accessible as required, limiting how a child seat can be properly secured. A software issue in the body control module causes the odometer to display speed in miles per hour instead of kilometres per hour and allows daytime running lamps to be manually switched off, which is not permitted under Canadian regulations.
