The 1985 GMC Safari has two recalls, both carrying serious crash risk: a front seat recliner bolt that can break and cause the seat back to suddenly collapse backward, and a steering gear mounting point that can crack and eventually cause total loss of steering control.
On vehicles with bucket seats and knob-type recliner mechanisms, a bolt in the recliner can fatigue and snap, sending the seat back flat without warning while driving. On the steering side, a mounting boss that attaches the steering gear to the frame rail can crack, and continued driving puts stress on the remaining two attachment points until they break as well, leaving the driver with no steering input.
