The 2003 GMC Safari has 2 recalls, both centered on the same front suspension defect: a lower ball joint boot that can be cut by contact with the steering knuckle, allowing road contamination to destroy the joint and cause a corner of the vehicle to drop to the ground.

When the protective rubber boot on the lower ball joint is cut, salt, dirt, and water work into the joint and accelerate wear. In the worst case, the steering knuckle separates from the lower control arm entirely, causing one front corner to collapse. This can happen on either side of the vehicle and affects steering control directly.
