The 2000 GMC Sonoma has 4 recalls, the most serious involving brake fluid leaks from improperly seated brake pipe fittings near the ABS module, which can reduce or eliminate braking ability.

The second brake-related recall covers a faulty spring clip inside the ABS motor that can shift out of position over time, creating friction that draws excess current and eventually causes the ABS motor to fail entirely. When that happens, the ABS warning light comes on and the rear brake proportioning system stops working, meaning the rear brakes can no longer automatically adjust their force to prevent wheel lockup during hard stops. Taken together, both brake recalls point to significant stopping-distance concerns under normal driving conditions.

The remaining two recalls both address the same labeling problem: the payload figure printed on the vehicle certification label is higher than the actual maximum the truck was built and validated to carry. If an owner loads the Sonoma to the weight shown on the label, the truck may handle and brake differently than expected, raising the risk of losing control or being unable to stop in time.
