The 2001 GMC Yukon XL has 4 recalls, the most serious involving the fuel pump wiring and a battery cable short: overheating fuel pump connectors can blow a fuse and stall the engine or prevent it from starting, while on Denali trims a positive battery cable can wear through its insulation against the steering shaft and cause intermittent electrical shorts.

On the safety equipment side, second and third row outboard seatbelt retractors on some vehicles contain a cracked internal component that can worsen with repeated use until the belt no longer locks, reducing protection in a crash. Vehicles equipped with the 8.1L engine also have a crankshaft position sensor that can fail intermittently, causing rough running, an illuminated check engine light, or an unexpected stall that may require waiting for the engine to cool before it will restart.
