The 2001 Honda Civic has 8 recalls, the most serious involving the airbags: both the driver and front passenger inflators can rupture during deployment, sending metal fragments through the airbag cushion and into the cabin, with the potential for serious injury or death.
The passenger airbag has an additional concern: on vehicles where the front passenger airbag was previously replaced, it may have been installed incorrectly and could deploy improperly in a crash. On the fuel system side, two separate issues affect certain Civics. The hose clamps securing the fuel filler neck tube can lack sufficient clamping force, allowing the tube to pull away from the fuel tank in a collision and spill fuel near potential ignition sources. There is also a fuel pump concern where residual water left in the pump's electrical connector during manufacturing can corrode the connection over time, causing the pump to fail and the engine to stall without warning.
