The 2009 Honda Civic has 8 recalls, the most serious being a defective front passenger airbag inflator that can rupture and send metal fragments into the cabin, causing serious injury or death.
The airbag issue spans several filings. At its core, the passenger-side inflator can explode rather than deploy cleanly, turning the inflator housing into a source of sharp metal shrapnel. Separate recalls address vehicles where replacement inflators were installed incorrectly, either at a dealership or during a prior repair attempt, meaning the airbag may not deploy properly in a crash even if the inflator itself is intact. Prior repair attempts did not fully resolve the issue in all cases, which is why multiple rounds of correction exist for this same component.
There is also a fuel system concern on certain sedan trims: a bracket that protects the fuel hose connector was assembled without a retaining nut, so in a crash the bracket can come loose and damage the connector, creating a fuel leak and raising the risk of fire.
