The 2009 Honda Fit has 10 recalls, the most serious being a passenger-side airbag inflator that can rupture and send metal fragments into the cabin, posing a risk of serious injury or death.
Both the driver and passenger frontal airbag inflators are affected by this Takata-related defect, and prior repair attempts at some dealerships did not fully resolve the issue: incorrectly installed replacement inflators may not deploy properly in a crash, raising the risk of injury. These airbag concerns account for the majority of the recalls on this vehicle.
On the drivetrain side, the driveshaft can break and cause a sudden loss of drive power while moving. A broken driveshaft also means the transmission no longer holds the vehicle in place, so if the parking brake has not been set before exiting, the car can roll away.
There are also two related engine concerns involving the variable valve timing system. Springs inside the system can fail or fracture, and in the worst case a broken spring fragment can jam the camshaft and cause the engine to stall. In some situations the engine may not restart after stalling.
