The 2014 Honda Insight has 3 recalls, all involving the Takata airbag inflators: both the driver and front passenger airbag inflators can rupture during deployment, sending sharp metal fragments into the cabin and causing serious injury or death.
Both the driver-side and front passenger-side frontal airbag inflators are affected. When either airbag deploys in a crash, the inflator can explode beyond its designed limits, fragmenting the metal housing and propelling shrapnel toward the driver and any front occupant. This is one of the most widely documented automotive safety defects in history, and prior repair attempts in earlier phases of this recall campaign did not fully resolve the issue for all affected vehicles.
