23 recalls across 15 model years
The Honda Insight has 23 recalls spanning 2001 through 2022, with the most serious recent issue being a DC-DC converter fault on 2020-2021 models that can shut down and prevent the 12-volt battery from recharging, cutting drive power while the vehicle is in motion.
The 2022 model year has a rear center seat belt retractor that can deactivate incorrectly, allowing a child safety seat to come loose in a crash. On 2021 models, the front passenger seat sensor can misread occupant weight and cause the passenger airbag to deploy at the wrong threshold during a crash. Fuel pump failures affecting 2019-2022 models cover multiple recall actions but share the same outcome: the low-pressure fuel pump inside the tank can fail and stall the engine while driving. The 2019 model year also has a restraint control unit that may carry a manufacturing error causing both airbags and seatbelt pretensioners to fail to deploy in a crash, a front seat belt buckle that can fail to latch and leave the occupant unrestrained, and a backup camera that can go dark while reversing. A body control module software fault on 2019-2020 vehicles can intermittently knock out windshield wipers, the defroster, rear camera, or exterior lights. There is also a recall on 2019 models for a software fix to the restraint system communication, distinct from the hardware-level control unit defect noted above.
The 2010-2014 model years carry the most extensive recall history, centered on Takata airbag inflators. Both the driver and passenger frontal airbag inflators on these vehicles can rupture and send metal fragments into the cabin. Several waves of replacement inflators were installed at dealerships, and some of those replacements were themselves installed incorrectly, meaning the passenger airbag could deploy improperly in a crash rather than correctly protecting the occupant. These inflator-related recalls cover various combinations of the 2010-2014 range.
The 2001 model year has a passenger airbag module with an improper weld that can prevent deployment in a collision, leaving the front passenger without supplemental protection.
