On the safety equipment side, the airbag control unit may have a manufacturing error that prevents airbags and seatbelt pretensioners from deploying in a crash, leaving occupants without their primary restraints. A related issue involves the right center pillar trim panel, where oversized mounting holes can allow the clip to fail and let the trim panel interfere with curtain airbag deployment during a crash. There is also a visibility concern: repeatedly opening and closing the tailgate can break the wiring harness that connects the rearview camera, leaving the driver without a rear view when backing up.
