The Hyundai Kona EV has 4 recalls covering the 2019-2021 model years, with the most serious being a 2021-only defect where coolant can leak into the electric power control unit, causing the vehicle to suddenly lose all drive power while in motion. The 2019 model year carries two separate high-voltage battery recalls, both involving the risk of an internal short circuit that can start a fire whether the vehicle is parked, charging, or being driven. One of these applies only to 2019 vehicles that did not receive a battery replacement under a prior recall remedy. The 2019 model year also has a brake system recall where an abnormal signal to the integrated electronic brake system can cause a sudden drop in braking performance, extending stopping distances; a warning light on the dashboard activates when this occurs.
